Willard Decker, also known as Will, was the commanding officer, and later executive officer, of the refit USS Enterprise from 2270 until his merging with the V'Ger probe in 2272.
Sometime prior to 2270, Decker served on Delta IV and became romantically involved with future Enterprise navigator, Ilia. He broke the relationship off, leaving without a good-bye.
Upon his promotion to rear admiral in 2270, James Kirk recommended Decker as his replacement as Enterprise commanding officer. Now at the rank of Captain, Decker oversaw the eighteen month refit of the Enterprise.
With the V'Ger threat in 2272, Kirk took command of the Enterprise, with Decker demoted to executive officer and the rank of Commander: a move he felt was unwise as he had more experience with the refit Enterprise than Kirk.
It was during this mission that Decker was reunited with Ilia. Unfortunately, this reunion was shortlived, as the V'Ger probe killed Ilia and replaced her with a probe mimicking her appearance. When the Enterprise crew discovered Ilia's personality was still somehow integrated into the probe, Decker used their relationship to his advantage, breaking through the programming defences and getting the true Ilia to explain more about V'Ger.
As a part of the away team to stop V'Ger at all costs, Decker sacrificed himself to satisfy the V'Ger probe in finding its "Creator", as well as be reunited with Ilia. Now as a part of a merged entity, Decker, with Ilia and V'Ger, departed for parts unknown. Kirk listed Decker as "missing in action". (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
- The novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture suggested Will Decker was Matthew Decker's son. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture (novel))
