The Republic was launched from the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in 2326 and was dispatched on a long-range exploratory mission of the Beta Quadrant. During the voyage along the borders of the Romulan Star Empire, the Republic was order to try and ascertain the reason for the Romulans isolation following the Tomed Incident of 2311. The Republic finally returned to Earth in 2331 and had charted over 100 different star systems and had encountered several new alien races. ("Into the Reach")
By 2347, the Republic, had been uprated with new technologies and acted as a testbed for equipment that was going to be installed aboard the new Galaxy-class starships. In that year, Captain Henrietta Newton assumed command of the Republic and remained in the position until 2353, when she took maternity leave to give birth to her second son, Sam. Following her departure, Newton's first officer, Lydia Bryant, was promoted to captain and assumed command
Shortly after, the Republic received a distress call from Starbase 311, which reported that the base was under attack by Tholian forces. By the time the Republic reached the area, the Tholians had withdrawn and the starbase was just a ruin. Only one survivor, Kyle Riker, was pulled alive from the wreckage of the base, and this led to Republic CMO, James Maxwell, to request reassignment to Starfleet Academy. ("First, Do No Harm")
In early 2357, the Republic was on a standard patrol along the Cardassian border, when she was suddenly ambushed by a Galor-class warship and suffered significant damage and casualties, including Captain Bryant. Thankfully, Commander Eugene Hall was able to assume command and managed to retreat to Starbase 375. Following lengthy repairs, Hall was promoted to captain and was granted command of the Republic. ("First, Do No Harm")
Around this time, Ensign Christopher Mackenzie was assigned to the Republic as a junior tactical officer. Mackenzie was eventually promoted to lieutenant junior grade and made deputy chief of security before transferring to the USS Enterprise-D in 2365. ("First, Do No Harm")
Hall eventually stepped down as CO in 2363 when he decided to take a leave of absence from Starfleet and spend some time with his wife and three children on Deneva. His replacement was T'Palit, a Vulcan captain, who had previously served aboard the USS Exeter. ("First, Do No Harm")
In 2379, after the disastrous Tezwa affair, the USS Republic along with the USS Musashi and the USS Amargosa were sent to aid the USS Enterprise-E with the reconstruction of Tezwa after millions of its citizens were killed and most of its major cities' structures were destroyed by the Klingons. (TNG novels: A Time to Kill & A Time to Heal).
