The USS Proxima (NCC-61952) was a Nebula-class Federation starship, active in the late 24th century.
Under the command of Captain John Steele the Proxima was sent on a long term exploration mission in the Gamma Quadrant. During that time it made several first contacts.
In 2370, the ship visited Eorath and made first contact with the Eorathites. While on the planet Captain Steele was kidnapped by the Dominion. The Proxima pursued and engaged the Jem'Hadar attack ship that had taken Steele. Despite the Proxima's apparent combat superiority it was quickly overwhelmed by the attack ship, which used its phased polaron beams to bypass its shields and destroy the ship's bridge. A boarding party of Jem'Hadar were then able to beam onboard, capture its main engineering and then force the crew to surrender after cutting life support to several decks. One hundred and twelve out of the seven hundred and thirty-one crew were killed in the short battle. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "To Seek and to be Found")
By 2373, Starfleet presumed the Dominion had destroyed the Proxima. (DS9: "In Purgatory's Shadow")
