USS Independence (NCC-90346)

The USS Independence was an explorer starship of the Sovereign-class built by the Federation Starfleet. (Decipher Games). It is the titular ship of the Star Trek: Independence (Novel Series). She serves as part of the 7th Fleet, deployed along the former Romulan Neutral Zone, reporting to Admiral Rex Moffett.

History

Shakedown

The Independence, or ‘Indy’ as she is referred to by members of the crew, was laid down in 2375 just prior to the end of the Dominion War. She was launched in 2377 on Stardate 54023.79 under the command of Captain Xian Moor. She was used as a testbed for new weapon systems being developed in response to the Dominion and Breen. She was the first Sovereign class vessel constructed with the first phase of the SOV-77 Refit Package as part of her at-launch design which would later be given to USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) in 2378. After a year in space, it was determined that she was ready for full service, ending her shakedown period. Successful tests of her defensive and sensor systems allowed the rest of the Sovereign-class ships to begin receiving the upgrades.

Early Service

Much of the ship's time during her first few years of service were spent providing aid to worlds that were still rebuilding after the Dominion War. From 2378-2381 the ship was responsible for delivering relief to over 50 worlds that saw heavy losses in the conflict. At the conclusion of that mission, the ship was placed back into drydock at McKinley Station to receive the second phase of the SOV-77 Refit. Independence received an extensive refit in 2387, adding new sensor and science packages as well as holographic console displays. During this refit, a major crew change occurred in which Commander Marc Wagner from the USS Liberty was assigned as First officer. His fellow Liberty officers Rachel Summers, Jennifer Williams, and Michael Sunsdahl were also transferred. Conn officer Lieutenant Alexandria Harris and operations officer Lieutenant Commander D'Lani Kurok transferred from the USS Agincourt.

Refit and Command Change

Command was transferred to the ship's First officer Marc Wagner in 2393 after Moor’s promotion to Rear Admiral. Commander Rachel Summers took over as First Officer. Lieutenant Commander Kyra Turner, a senior doctor aboard, took over for Summers as Chief Medical Officer. Commander Bret Lonsway transferred aboard as Chief Science Officer. At that time, the ship received an extensive refit consisting of upgrades to the weapon and shield systems as well as the replacement of ablative hull armor with more durable tetraburnium armor.

In 2395, a crew rotation took place while the ship underwent scheduled maintenance at McKinley Station. Conn officer Ensign Peshia Shran was assigned to the ship out of Starfleet Academy, Lieutenant Commander David Whitford took over operations, and Lieutenant Commander Jack Moffett took over as security chief.
