Captain Sesballa, a Rigellian, was commanding officer of Exeter in 2333. The ship was the flagship of a task force of 32 Federation starships — including USS Stargazer — against the D'Prayl that year. (Stargazer novel: Enigma)
Mark Coleman captained the Exeter from the late 2340s through the mid-2350s. (Star Trek: Pendragon)
In April 2346, the Exeter was assigned to transport Ambassador Anton Tyler and his heavily pregnant wife, Emilia, to a diplomatic conference between Federation and Klingon representatives. En route, Emilia gave birth to Joseph Tyler. (Star Trek: Daedalus: "Ghosts")
Before his dismissal from Starfleet, Tom Paris served aboard the Exeter. (VOY: "Non Sequitur")
The Exeter served with the Ninth Fleet, operating near Bajor, during the Dominion War, and during that time, visited Deep Space 9. In 2374, DS9 crew members resupplied the Exeter and, later in that same year, were supplied reports on casualties sustained to the Ninth Fleet during battles on the Dominion front. (DS9: "You Are Cordially Invited...", "In the Pale Moonlight")

[edit] Star Trek: Pendragon
In the Pendragon timeline, the Exeter fought on Admiral Leyton's side during the so-called Federation Civil War. Following the final battle and her subsequent refit in early 2374, the Exeter was placed under the command of Elizabeth Shelby. Captain Shelby remained aboard the Exeter until her reassignment to the USS Magellan in 2377. A significant portion of Exeter's senior staff followed Shelby to her new command.
- In Star Trek: Pendragon, Shelby's crew aboard the Exeter included many of those who would have served aboard the USS Excalibur under Mackenzie Calhoun in the Dominion War timeline, as seen in Star Trek: New Frontier.
[edit] Star Trek: The Quarterdeck Breed
Prior to the Dominion War, Exeter had been relegated to the Starfleet inactive reserve fleet at the Antares Ship Yards. Due to a lack of resources, all ships held by the inactive reserve fleet was activated and pressed into military service in late 2373. Exeter had her systems upgraded for the conflict with the Dominion and reported for duty at Starbase 375 to join the Ninth Fleet. At that time, the Exeter was under the command of Captain Grith, one of the few Gorn officers in Starfleet. She served in Operation Return, the Second Battle of Chin'toka, the Battle of Ricktor Prime, and the Battle of Cardassia. She earned two Starfleet Unit Commendations during that war.
After the Treaty of Bajor was signed, Exeter was ordered to be decommissioned. She was later replaced by the Intrepid-class light cruiser, USS Exeter. (Star Trek: The Quarterdeck Breed: "Exeter")
