The Foundry was the user-generated content portion of Star Trek Online, where (originally) paid subscribers to the game could create their own unique missions which could then be shared with other players through the game's mission log interface. As these Foundry missions were not part of the officially-licensed program, and were created by individual players of the game, they constitute works of fan fiction.
Periodically, Foundry missions that were well-received (as indicated by player reviews and other feedback) were selected as Spotlight Missions and displayed on the game's Available Missions screen.
Due to mounting technical issues and a lack of "legacy knowledge" among STO's developers, the Foundry was retired on April 11, 2019. Many mission playthroughs can be found on YouTube, and several Foundry authors have begun projects to continue the Foundry's legacy, such as Pax Federatica's STO Peacemakers project.
