Temporal Prime Directive

The Star Trek Expanded Universe Database is for fanon and related content. See Memory-Alpha.org for the canon Star Trek wiki.

The Temporal Prime Directive is a Federation Starfleet principle that members of Starfleet should avoid directly interfering with the timeline in instances of time travel. (TNG: "A Matter of Time")

In 2374, Q referenced the Temporal Prime Directive as why he could not explain to Jonathan Masters the meaning behind his statement that it was not yet time for Masters to die. Q stated that the directive meant that Masters should not ask such a question of a person who knew about future events since it could lead to an altering of the timeline. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Q, Time and Again")

Following the USS Yorktown's arrival in 2378 from the year 2395, Captains' Joseph Tyler and Christopher Mackenzie were both concerned about breaking the Temporal Prime Directive when it came to the two crews interacting and working together and the risk of future knowledge being imparted to the USS Daedalus crew. However, following some "persuasion" from the Doctor, both captains agreed to ignore the Temporal Prime Directive in the face of the ongoing crisis with Trelane. (Star Trek: Daedalus: "Echoes", "Greater Than the Sum")
