The Tellarites are a porcine-humanoid race native to Tellar Prime and a foundation member of the United Federation of Planets.

Physical description[]

Tellarites are often stout and sturdy in stature, and, more often than not, shorter than humans. Males normally wear beards, while both males and females have snout-like noses and recessed eyes. Some, but not all, Tellarites' hands bear a hoof-like resemblance. Their body temperature tends to be higher than humans. (TOS: "Babel"; ENT: "Babel One")

Tellarites are porcine in nature, as evidenced by USS Cantabrian security officer Snerl's squealing after a Myhr'an broke his leg in 2372, as well as the propensity for Tellarites to enjoy mud baths. ((Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Catalyst, Part One"); ENT: "Bounty")

Society[]

Impatience and a stubborn pride, strong emotions and a good argument are all traits of Tellarites and their acceptable societal norms. (ENT: "United", "The Forge", "Bounty") Socially, Tellarites consider complaining a way to start a conversation, and, if complaints run dry, insults are acceptable. Whilst arguing makes them excel at politics, overall, Tellarites can be trusted. (ENT: "Babel One", "Dead Stop")

History[]

The Tellarites created warp drive sometime prior to Earth's 20th century. They had also made first contact with the Vulcans by this time as well. (ENT: "Carbon Creek")

The first Earth ship to make contact with the Tellarite race was the SS Leif Ericsson. The report, sent by conventional radio, would not reach Earth until 2288. (Delta Dynamics: Star Fleet Starship Recognition Manual: Report: Constitution Heavy Cruisers)

The Tellarites joined the Andorians, Humans and Vulcans in a temporary alliance in 2154 when under threat by the Romulans. (ENT: "Babel One", "United"). By the next year, this relationship evolved with the possibility to create a Coalition of Planets. (ENT: "Demons"). By 2161, the Tellarites, with the other coalition and non-coalition races, created the United Federation of Planets. Beyond this date and into the 24th century and beyond, Tellarites served in Starfleet and on the Federation Council. (ENT: "Zero Hour", "These are the Voyages..."; Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home; DS9: "Apocalypse Rising")
