A task force is a group of starships with a common goal.

In the late 2220s, Admiral Luther Whitetree commanded Task Force K aboard the Baton Rouge-class USS Glasgow. It consisted of Glasgow and four Mann-class starships. (TOS novel: The Final Reflection)
The Sadat-class USS Accord — commanded by Commodore Indra Suleiman — was part of Task Force Betawi, which battled Klingon forces in defense of New Ruritania in 2231. During the Four Years War, Garth of Izar aboard USS Constitution was in command of Task Force Constitution. (Star Trek: Avenger)

USS Exeter, commanded by Captain Sesballa, was the flagship of a task force of 32 Federation starships confronting the D'Prayl in 2333. (Stargazer novel: Enigma)
In 2372, USS Venture led Admiral Hastur's task force sent to support Deep Space 9 when it became apparent that the Klingons would attack the station. Included in the task force were the USS Swiftfire along with two other Excelsior-class starships, the Miranda-class, USS Trial and a Nebula-class starship. In 2372, a Cardassian task force destroyed the USS Gallant as it patrolled the Demilitarized Zone. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet)
In mid-2373, Rear Admiral Jennifer Douglas led a nine ship task force from the 59th Tactical Wing into Klingon space to assist in the hunt for the rogue Starfleet vessel USS Fury. Included in this task force were the USS Venture, USS Knox, USS Resolution and the USS Virgo. The USS Swiftfire-A was later sent to join the task force in the hunt for the Fury. Task Force 383, also known as Gamma Force, was composed of USS Chimera (NCC-91010) and three other ships assigned to Miranda Outpost in the Gamma Quadrant. Gamma Force was under the command of Fleet Admiral Julia Herra. (Star Trek: Chimera)
