Captain Styles was a Starfleet line officer on active duty in the 23rd century. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)

Styles had no canon given name. FASA's Star Trek III Sourcebook Update gave him the first name of Lawrence. The Star Trek: Excelsior novel Forged in Fire affirmed this and added a middle initial, H. The Decipher RPG asserted that his given name was Robert.

Stiles was born in the Republic of Mars. (Star Trek III Sourcebook Update)

Starfleet career[]

Styles was a commanding officer with a conservative and supercilious style of command. He was known to carry a swagger stick, allegedly a Klingon artifact. He had previously served on the Constitution-class ships USS Farragut — where he and James T. Kirk had previously met, in the 2250s — and USS Monitor in the 2260s. (TOS novel: Prime Directive)

He was a friend of USS Grissom's captain J.T. Esteban, but sometime prior to Christmas 2282, Styles told Esteban he felt commanding an Oberth-class vessel was "beneath him". (Star Trek: Grissom: "One Small Step")

While USS Excelsior was being constructed, Captain Styles was involved in the testing of transwarp drive aboard smaller vessels such as shuttlecraft. Torias Dax was killed during one of the tests. (DS9 anthology: The Lives of Dax: "Infinity")

Styles also commanded Excelsior during initial trials of its transwarp drive. After several members of the crew of USS Enterprise attempted to escape from Earth Spacedock in 2285, Excelsior attempted pursuit but her systems had been sabotaged — by Excelsior's newly-appointed Captain of Engineering, Montgomery Scott.

Despite the embarrassment of the incident, Styles retained command of Excelsior but was forced to accept Commander Hikaru Sulu as his first officer. Styles and Sulu served together through the end of 2289 when Styles was one of those killed by saboteurs at the Korvat peace conference. (Star Trek: Excelsior novel: Forged in Fire)

Given names in other continuities[]

Federation Spaceflight Chronology[]

Styles was said to have the given name of Raymond. (Federation Spaceflight Chronology, vol. 12)

Orion Press[]

Styles had the given name of Philip in this continuity. (Orion Press: "The Blue Rose", The Dianasian Gift)

In the 2270s, Captain Styles commanded USS Invincible (NCC-1861). During Thela Kazanga's service on the Invincible, she was promoted to lieutenant commander twice -- and demoted back to lieutenant twice -- by Styles. He had a reputation for being very by-the-book, giving demotions where others might have given commendations. ("The Blue Rose")
