The idea that different sleeve stripes could exist and that various facets of the uniform could signify enlisted status originates from fan fiction and fan reference sources, based on licensed non-canon publications, such as FASA's Star Trek RPG. These insignia originated from the Trekker's Alternity Galactopedia.
