Starfleet Second Fleet

The Second Fleet was a numbered fleet in the United Federation of Planets Starfleet that was deployed during at least the 22nd, 23rd and 24th centuries. The Second Fleet was one of many that saw extensive action during the Dominion War.

Just over a week after the war begun the Dominion pushed the Second Fleet back from its pre-war position. The fleet lost twenty-nine ships in the retreat. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "The Front")

The fleet was redeployed to a system close to a nebula, which interfere with sensors and communications. The fleet patrolled the nebula to watch for Dominion forces sneaking through. However the communication problems caused by the nebula meant the Dominion was able to covertly destroy the patrols and deploy a force within the nebula. They then launched a frontal assault that drew out the Second Fleet and allowed the hidden Dominion force to attack from the rear. Only the arrival of the Sixteenth Fleet saved the situation and allowed the Second to barely hold its line. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Over the Horizon")

The Second Fleet would eventually be deployed to the Kotanka system, where it was engaged by Dominion forces. Elements of the fleet were then reassigned to Starbase 375, where it joined the Fifth Fleet in preparation for Operation Return. (DS9: "Favor the Bold")

En route to Deep Space 9 the combined Federation fleet was engaged by a larger Dominion force. The fleet managed to successful break through the Dominion lines, thanks to the late, but timely arrive of Klingon reinforcements to the battle. In late 2374, the Second Fleet launched a number of attacks on the Dominion forces occupying Betazed. (DS9: "The Sound of Her Voice")

In 2377-78, Fleet Admiral W. Summers was the Second's fleet commander. (Ships of the Star Fleet, Vol. 4: Star Fleet Operating Forces. )
