Starfleet Medical was a division of the Federation Starfleet that was dedicated to medical research and treatment of Starfleet crew. Based out of San Francisco on Earth, Starfleet Medical oversaw all Starfleet medical personnel and facilities.

In the 23rd century, an office existed known as the Starfleet Surgeon General which held some command authority over Starfleet Medical, including the power to relieve starship medical officers for incompetence. (TOS: "Turnabout Intruder", Orion Press: "Never Forget")

This division maintained the Starfleet Medical Database, an archive of information, including all known diseases and treatments, as well as the physiologies of all known species. (TNG: "Genesis")

Starfleet Medical operated a scientific publication: the Starfleet Medical Journal. (VOY: "Body and Soul")

Training and education

Starfleet Medical Academy (often referred to as just Starfleet Medical) -- with whom the larger division was associated -- was the college of Starfleet Academy tasked with the training and continuing education of Starfleet's physicians, nurses and medics. (DS9: "Emissary")

Towards the end of the USS Enterprise's first five-year mission under James T. Kirk, Dr. Leonard McCoy's proposal to revamp the curriculum at Starfleet Medical Academy was met with resistance, due to his personal history with John Leland, the admiral in charge of Starfleet Medical's overall budget. Leland finally relented to implementing the new curriculum (which would improve education on the treatment of non-humans) -- but only if McCoy removed his name from the curriculum proposal. (Absolute Horizon)

Ships and facilities

In conjunction with Starfleet Operations, this division was in charge of medical couriers and hospital ships. (Orion Press: "Shades of Grey")

The Starfleet Medical Center (aka Starfleet Teaching Hospital) was located next to Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco. 30 such facilities existed throughout the Federation and were referred to as "Sector General" medical centers. (Orion Press: "Aftermath", Drink Deeply)

One of these was located in Bethesda, Maryland (Star Trek: Avenger); another in Chicago. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "The Burnt Child")
