Starfleet Fifth Fleet

The Starfleet Fifth Fleet was a numbered fleet in the United Federation of Planets Starfleet, active during at least the 22nd, 23rd and 24th centuries.
Following the Klingon invasion of Cardassia in 2372, the Fifth Fleet was deployed to Sector 432 near the Federation-Cardassian border. The fleet based themselves out of a star system within the sector that was home to a Federation starbase. The Sector 432 repair yards were built in that system to support the fleet. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "The Front")
After the Klingons broke the ceasefire during the Second Federation-Klingon War the Fifth was tasked with engaging and driving back the Klingon Fourth Battlegroup, which had closed over the Federation-Klingon border and attacked Belis IV. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Chariots of Korvat")
In mid-2373 the Fifth Fleet was stationed near the Federation-Klingon border. Following the renegade attacks on the Klingon Empire by the USS Fury several ships from the fleet were dispatched to assist the Klingons in the hunt for the Fury. The rest of the fleet was then deployed to defensive positions in case the situation spiralled out of control and the Klingons chose to retaliate against the Federation. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Vengeance")

[edit] Dominion War
The Fifth Fleet was under the command of Admiral Victor Harvey at the beginning of the Dominion War in 2373 and was stationed in Sector 432 near the Cardassian border. It was a defensive deployment though the fleet did probe along the Cardassian border. The Dominion soon forced the fleet to retreat further into Federation space, before it retreated the fleet lost around thirty starships. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Deployment", "The Front")
Redeployed to the Guyra system the Fifth was joined by Klingon Third Battlegroup for joint operations. Both fleets would take part in the Battle of Guyra in the system where the fleet lost sixty-four ships. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Regression", "Over the Horizon")
The USS Edmund Fitzgerald, commanded by Captain Robert DeSoto, would become one of the capital ships of the 5th. (USS Baldwin: "Wartime Productions")
The Third Battlegroup is replaced by the Klingon Ninth Battlegroup, which along with elements from the Fifth took part in the Raid on Sector 432, a companion attack planned along with the Battle of Tyra. The Raid was a success but the failure at Tyra cancelled out the gains made in Section 432. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Pressure Points")
The Fifth was then reassigned to the Vulcan border to receive a reprieve from the fighting, however the Dominion's continual advance soon shifts the fighting up to the Vulcan border. (DS9: "Favor the Bold"; Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Pressure Points")
Operation Return saw an element of the Fifth fleet assigned to Captain Benjamin Sisko's plan to recapture Deep Space 9. Following the battle the fleet was rotated off the frontlines to replace its losses. (DS9: "Favor the Bold", "Sacrifice of Angels"; Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Rode the 600")
Following Operation Return the 59th Tactical Wing was released from the fleet and formed into Starfleet Task Force 59. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Task Force 59")
The Fifth Fleet also included the 10th Wing. Captain Patrick Ingrum of the USS Baldwin was given command of this wing in 2375. Patrick's first mission as wing commander was to lead his wing on a mission to retake Betazed. (USS Baldwin: "Determined Warrior")
The 10th Wing also engaged in a campaign to retake Betazed while the rest of the Fifth engaged the Jem'Hadar as a diversion. (USS Baldwin: "Determined Warrior") Later, the Fifth would be targeted for an ambush attempt by having ships hidden in the Ludine Nebula. Intelligence information compiled by Baldwin quickly uncovered the ambush. (USS Baldwin: "Danger Zone")
[edit] The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon continuity
In the The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon, the Fifth Fleet was commanded by Admiral Salok from 2371. During the Dominion War Salok's flagship was the USS Gibraltar. Apart from Operation Return the fleet saw major action in the First, Second and Third Battle of Vulcanis.
[edit] Post-Dominion War
In 2377-78, Admiral Chris Wallace was the Fifth's fleet commander. (Ships of the Star Fleet, Vol. 4: Star Fleet Operating Forces. )
