[edit] Design features
The Saber-class is a very compact ship design. It differs from most Federation designs by no separation between the saucer section and engineering hull like most Federation vessels. The ship also has its nacelles connected directly to the side of the hull of the ship instead of extending out on arms. This gives the ship a very sleek look and also provides low cross sections from the front and sides.
The ship is armed with four Type-X phaser arrays located on the dorsal and ventral sides of the saucer section. The ship also has two torpedo launchers. One pointing forward and the other to the rear. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet)
The Saber has a small bridge. The layout is similar to other Federation vessels with the main viewscreen dominating the forward area. The conn is located at the fore of the bridge, with the captain's chair behind it. The other stations are arrayed around the sides of the bridge. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Change in Command")
The ship's has two shuttlebays accessible from the front of the saucer. These shuttlebays are not large enough to carry Peregrine-class attack fighters. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "Change in Command")
[edit] Naming schemae
Different blocks of this class had particular naming schema:
- Edged weapons, e.g., USS Katana, USS Saber (ASDB/Ships of the Star Fleet (Chris Wallace)
- Pre-Industrial Era (Earth) projectile weapons, e.g., USS Arquebus, USS Crossbow (ASDB/Ships of the Star Fleet (Chris Wallace)
- Terran engineers, e.g., USS Bartram, USS Brunel, USS Marvick, USS Tucker (Star Trek: The Adventures of Argus; Star Trek: Daedalus)
- Terran nation-states, e.g., USS Denmark, USS Luxembourg (Decipher)
- Terran test pilots and astronauts, e.g., USS Gagarin, USS Schirra, USS Shepard, USS Yeager (Decipher and canon)
- Cat Gods of the Egyptians, e.g., USS Bastet, USS Sekhmet, USS Menhet (D'Sefet's Cat House, the logs of Federation Installation Nine)
[edit] Background
- The ship specifications are from the Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet.
- In the reference book, Star Trek: Deep Space 9 Technical Manual, the Saber-class is given the same size dimensions as the Norway-class. Yet it is also stated as been half the mass and having less then half the crew and evacuation capacity, which is similar to that of the Defiant-class. Given the other non-canon productions have shown the Saber to be a smaller craft it can be considered that the dimensions in this publication are erroneous.
