Romulan Neutral Zone map

Section-map of the Romulan Neutral Zone in 2266

The Romulan Neutral Zone was a buffer created following the end of the Earth-Romulan War between the United Federation of Planets and the Romulan Star Empire. Any entry into the Zone would be considered an act of war by either side. (TOS: "Balance of Terror")

The Romulans referred to the buffer as the Outmarches. (TOS novel: My Enemy, My Ally, ENT novel: The Romulan War: To Brave the Storm)

In the 22nd and 23rd centuries, the Zone was monitored by Earth Outpost Stations on the Federation side. ("Balance of Terror")

By the mid 28th century, the area had become known as the Old Neutral Zone. (Star Trek: 001: "New Beginnings")

Star Trek: 001[]

Sometime prior to 2752, the Romulan Imperial Navy would covertly abduct any alien species who would drift into the Old Neutral Zone, and run biological and chamical experiments on them for the Alliance. Tanik disagreed with the practices and was driven to defect to the Federation. ("New Beginnings")

In 2752, the USS Domtar was disabled near here and Starbase 001 sent the USS Pollux to recover them. Upon reaching the Old Neutral Zone, the Pollux was attacked by a Romulan ship of unknown design. ("New Beginnings")

RIS Bouteina[]

In 2354, the USS Raven has crossed the Neutral Zone in order to chase a Borg cube. However, its crossing of the Neutral Zone was never interpreted as an act of war because the ship was unarmed and they had nothing to do with Romulans. (RIS Bouteina: "Night of the Were-Hawks")

Star Trek: Arcadia[]

The Neutral Zone was finally abolished in 2382, with the rise of the Romulan Republic and signing of peace accords with the Federation.

The Neutral Zone contained several star systems and planets, both inhabited and uninhabited. One system was the location of the planet Horuulk. (Star Trek: Arcadia)

Star Trek: Avenger[]

Commander Fillmore of the USS Avenger was transported by a time-travel-related accident to Veshkam III, a class-L planet in the Romulan Neutral Zone, in the 2nd century A.C.E. (Star Trek: Avenger: "Time Waits for No Man")

Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions[]

In 2384, undercover Starfleet Special Ops operative Daniel Radke stole a Romulan shuttle from Unroth III to bring Corey Aster back to the Federation. Three Romulan warbirds crossed the Neutral Zone behind the shuttle in an attempt to stop him, but the threat of combined Starfleet and Klingon forces drove the Romulans to retreat back to the Neutral Zone before an escalation of hostilities took place. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Dream a Little Dream of Me")
