Robert was diagnosed with Tanos Syndrome when he was 11 years old. The disease, which inhibits his growth and causes him slight discomfort at certain times of the day, is ultimately fatal. Dispite this, Robert has a rather shining personality. Robert is a practicing Muslim. Attempting, to the best of his ability, to maintain the ancient traditions of the religion.

Robert and his family moved to Starfleet Medical in 2254 for a three and a half year stay while the best doctors researched his condition. Though no definite breakthrough was made, Robert was allowed to join Starfleet and he entered the Academy in 2258 at the age of 18. Graduating in the middle of his class, Robert was assigned light duty aboard the Farragut. In 2265, Commander Julienne Cochrane tagged him for Tactical Officer about the USS Tamerlane.
