Quantum torpedoes are a type of torpedo that was used by the Federation, Terran rebellion and Cardassian Union. The torpedo entered service in the 2370s and were more powerful than the standard photon torpedo.
The first Starfleet vessel to be equipped with quantum torpedoes was the USS Defiant. With this successful deployment following ships of the Defiant-class were also equipped with these weapons. (DS9: "The Defiant", "Valiant", "What You Leave Behind")
The USS Lakota received a weapons upgrade in 2372 that included the addition of quantum torpedoes. During its battle to keep the USS Defiant from reaching Earth Vice Admiral James Leyton ordered the Lakota to use its quantum torpedoes to destroy the Defiant. Captain Erika Benteen balked at this order not willing to destroy another Starfleet vessel and stood down her starship. (DS9: "Paradise Lost")
The Sovereign-class was equipped with quantum torpedoes. (Star Trek: First Contact)
For reasons unknown, the Romulans gained access to quantum torpedo technology between 2379 and 2383. The Bouteina refit of the Norexan-class had a quantum torpedo tube installed on existing hulls. (RIS Bouteina)
