An ocular implant is a device allowing blind or visually-impaired people to gain artificial eyesight. The implant is usually installed within the eyeball or replaces the eyeball entirely and usually appears to be a regular eye until the viewer is up close, where the intricate internal workings can be revealed on the iris and pupil.
Originally rejecting the technology in 2365, stating it was not advanced enough, USS Enterprise-D chief engineer Geordi La Forge swapped his VISOR for ocular implants sometime between 2371 and 2373. Like his VISOR, his implants gave him the abilities such as detecting heat changes in the infrared spectrum and telescopic zooming. (Star Trek: First Contact)
