Fanon
Edit
The class was designed during a period of tension between the Federation and Cardassian Union. The class was designed primarily for military uses from capital ship support, escort duties and direct starship engagements. The first vessel entered service in 2358.
The ship was heavily armed with six phaser arrays and five torpedo launchers, including the three distinctive high-capacity cannons located above the saucer and below the engineering hull. Following its performance in the Dominion War several upgrades were proposed for the class, which included: ablative armor, upgrading to type-X arrays and even regenerative shields, though with the latter it would probably necessitate a larger warp core to power the vessel. Non-canon
Edit
The lead ship and prototype, USS New Orleans, was on active duty in 2333 (Stargazer novel: Progenitor), so it is assumed that construction of the class was authorized at least ca. 2330.
