The NX class was a revolutionary Human starship design from the mid-22nd century. It was the first Earth starship to be built around the warp five engine greatly enhancing humanity's ability to explore the region around its home system. The first vessel of the class, the Enterprise (NX-01) was launched in 2151. (ENT: "Broken Bow", et al.)

In the mid-2150s, Enterprise and its extant sister ships underwent a refit to add an outboard module with a matter/antimatter reactor and an improved deflector dish. (Star Trek Ships of the Line Calendar 2011)

While at least one ship of the class -- Columbia -- went missing, and three -- Challenger, Discovery and Atlantis -- were destroyed in combat during the Earth-Romulan War, other ships of this class were incorporated into the nascent United Federation of Planets Starfleet.

Only a small number of these vessels were in service during the war, due to the relative expense of construction compared to Daedalus-class starships. (ENT novel: The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing)

In The Romulan War, a 24th century historian at Starfleet Academy asserted that the cost of building a Daedalus-class starship was one-fourth that of building an NX-class ship.

After Columbia went missing, and presumed destroyed, a new series of vessels was built using the basic NX-class spaceframe, but adding a secondary hull. These vessels would be known as the Columbia class. Two vessels retrofitted to this standard were the Enterprise and the Endeavour. (Rise of the Federation novel A Choice of Futures)

Intrepid (NX-07) was presumed destroyed by a Romulan mine a year after formal hostilities had ended. Its actual fate would not be known for 222 years. (TNG novel: Indistinguishable From Magic)

There was at least one post-Earth-Romulan War refit of some ships of the class, in 2164. (Indistinguishable From Magic)
