The Hermes class was a class of Federation scout in operation during the 23rd century.
The Hermes was designed along side the Saladin-class and shares many features, with the main difference been that it only has one phaser bank and a smaller crew complement. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era)
The Hermes Class was introduced in the late 2220s to Early 2240s.

Hermes-class scouts were mostly tasked for Starfleet Intelligence missions, at least in the 2260s, but the USS Adventure's mission was one of science and exploration.
