Major is an officer rank used by the MACOs and Federation Marines, superior to captain and subordinate to lieutenant colonel and colonel.

This rank is also used in the Bajoran Militia and other armies. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)

The Romulans also used the rank in their Ground Forces and Tal Shiar. They were both above the rank of captain while the RGF was below centurion and in the Tal Shiar it was below colonel. (The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon) Both organizations referred to majors as aendehs in Rihannsu. (RIS Bouteina)

The So'ja also used this rank in their military structure. Officers of this rank were most commonly seen in the intelligence agencies (such as the Okad Pahn) and other quasi-military organizations associated with the So'ja High Command. (Star Trek: Pioneer (STP))

The rank is equivalent to the Starfleet rank of lieutenant commander, and subcommander in the Federation Starfighter Corps.

The term comes from the armies and marines of Earth. The United States Army abbreviation was MAJ; the Marine Corps used Maj.
