Joseph M'Benga was a Federation Starfleet medical officer on active duty during at least the 23rd century.

M'Benga's given name was not revealed during his two appearances in TOS. In the TOS novels The Vulcan Academy Murders and The IDIC Epidemic, it was said to be Geoffrey. In the Star Trek: Vanguard novels, his given name was Jabilo. His given name, Joseph, was revealed in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: "The Elysian Kingdom".

M'Benga served as a physician during the Klingon War of 2256-57, where he met Christine Chapel while both were assigned to the forward operating base on J'Gal. They reported to the base's chief medical officer, Commander Buck Martinez. (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: "The Broken Circle", "Under the Cloak of War")

In 2259, M'Benga was assigned as chief medical officer of the USS Enterprise, then under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: "Strange New Worlds")

In 2264, he was assigned to Starbase 47 and worked with Dr. Ezekiel Fisher. (Star Trek: Vanguard novels: Harbinger and Open Secrets)

Later, M'Benga served as assistant chief medical officer of the Enterprise during James T. Kirk's first five-year mission as its commanding officer, reporting to Leonard McCoy. M'Benga had interned for four years in a Vulcan ward and was educated in aspects of Vulcan medicine and physiology, such as the healing trance. Dr. Christine Chapel referenced an article of M'Benga's, "An Overview of Telepathic Challenges and Solutions for the Nontelepathic Caregiver," when treating a patient. (Star Trek novella: The More Things Change)

In this continuity, his full name was Baraka Keme M'Benga (nicknamed "Keme", though he allowed McCoy to call him "Ben").

M'Benga was of Zulu and Masai descent (Orion Press: "To Leap Tall Buildings").

Beginning around 2292, M'Benga was Starfleet Surgeon General. (Orion Press: Chekov's Enterprise)

In 2296, M'Benga had planned on retiring, but became chief medical officer of the USS Hyperion, commanded by Captain Nyota Uhura. (Orion Press: "A Motley Crew")

Legacy[]
