Luna, known on Earth as simply the Moon, is the only natural satellite of the planet Earth.

Historical[]

The Moon is believed to have been created when a Mars-sized planetesimal (designated Theia by 20th century astrophysicists) collided with Earth in its early history.

Luna 2155

The first known Moon landing was in 1969. Goddard Moonbase was established in 1997, with permanent settlements established over the next decade. (Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology; TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)

In Star Trek Star Charts, the first lunar colony was establised in 2039.

A covert Vulcan base, whose remit was to surveil Earth and its inhabitants, was stationed on the "dark side" of the Moon in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. (The Federation Files: "No Good Deed")

Political[]

After the development of artificial gravity, colonization of Earth's moon advanced at a rapid pace, eventually making it a base of operations for colonization into the Belt and Mars. Over the decades, powerful Lunar corporations began to threaten Earth's environmental and economic future, which led to the United Earth government. Luna was annexed, and after the Terra Prime incident, corporations were finally banned from Luna. (The Romulan War: "Luna")

As a major human settlement, Luna fell under Federation jurisdiction and protection. It was also a subdivision of United Earth.

About 2100, some members of the Lunar One colony who had rebelled against the ruling government left the Sol system and settled on JoJuri III. (Starship Tristan: "Be Careful What You Wish For", "The Voice of Your Blood")

In the 24th century there were over 50 million people living on the Moon. (Star Trek: First Contact) In Earth slang, people who lived on the moon were called lunar schooners. The lunar inhabitants were not fond of the term. (DS9: "Valiant"; Star Trek: Pendragon: "Children of the Burning Heart")

Academic[]

Starfleet Academy maintained an off-planet training facility on the Moon. (TOS novel: The Galactic Whirlpool)

By the early 23rd century, one of the tertiary educational institutions on Luna was the University of the Ocean of Storms. (TOS novel: The Final Reflection)

The diplomat Emanuel Tagore received a degree and/or taught here, per The Final Reflection.

Geographical[]

One of the three monoliths that made up the Alien Obelisk Sol-Sirius Network was located on Luna. (Dimensional Prophecy of Zohar)

Locations[]

Per FASA RPG: Cadet's Orientation Sourcebook, Luna City was the capital of the Lunar colonies. Per Star Trek Star Charts, Tycho City was the capital.
The Vulcanis Lunar Colony is presumably not located on a moon of Vulcan, as it does not have any moons. Given its name, it may be on Luna.
