In starship classification, a light escort was a type of escort that was not as heavily armed and armored as a standard escort.

The Romulan swift bird-of-prey was the equivalent of a Starfleet light escort. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 5: Starships of the Romulan Star Empire)
