Lieutenant is the lowest officer rank used in the Federation Starfighter Corps, immediately subordinate to senior lieutenant. (Star Trek: Remington)

The corresponding Starfleet rank is Ensign.

The term comes from the United States Air Force of the 20th century. The USAF abbreviation was Lt.

The corresponding rank in the Royal Air Force and many other Commonwealth air forces was pilot officer.

In the 24th century, insignia are worn on both sides of the collar and on the sleeves.
