A lawyer is a person who is normally educated at a law school and practices law. A lawyer is often called upon to resolve legal matters. Typically, passage of the bar exam is a pre-requisite for practice of the law.
Prestige in the legal job marketEdit
According to the book 1L Life is Hell, jurisdictions were divided in two broad categories with respect to how law school prestige was treated in the job market: prestige-sensitive and prestige-insensitive. Many Federation jurisdictions were prestige-sensitive, whereas the Lyran Star Empire was prestige-insensitive. (Star Trek: False Vacuum: "Scrap Yard Vegas")
In prestige-sensitive jurisdictions or areas of practice, law firms had sliding rules that regulated how prestige related to the interview requirements; in fact, prestige was considered a legal skill in its own right, perhaps even a skill of prime importance. Prestige-sensitive jurisdictions often featured rankings of law schools such as Above the Law. (Star Trek: False Vacuum: "Pledge of the Protester")
By area of practiceEdit
Prestige-sensitive areas of law included commercial, corporate law as well as interplanetary law; public interplanetary law was more prestige-sensitive than private interplanetary law. However, small-time criminal law, family law and small-time immigration law were considered prestige-insensitive areas of practice. (Star Trek: False Vacuum: "Pledge of the Protester")
By law firm typeEdit
Major law firms in prestige-sensitive jurisdictions or areas of practice tended to care about prestige more than smaller law firms. For example, Hutz, Sanchez & Van Phuoc, a leading Brussels law firm, would consider a top-15% Cogley Law School graduate on equal footing with an average Washington University in St. Louis graduate and a bottom-15% University of Chicago graduate.
