- This article deals with the Starfleet rank. For the rank "captain" in the Marines, see captain (marines).
Captain is the highest line-officer rank used in Earth Starfleet and Federation Starfleet, immediately superior commander. A captain may be a department head or commanding officer of a starship or starbase, an aide-de-camp or adjutant of a flag officer, or a fleet captain.
The commanding officer of a vessel is addressed as "captain" while on their ship, regardless of rank.
This rank is also used in the Imperial Klingon Fleet and the Klingon Defense Force and other star navies.
The rank is equivalent to the Marines rank of colonel, flight commander in the Federation Starfighter Corps, the Cardassian Union title of gul, the Ferengi quasi-military title of daimon, and the Romulan and pre-Federation Vulcan rank of commander.
