José Tyler was a Starfleet officer on active duty in the 23rd century. Tyler served as the navigator aboard the USS Enterprise in 2254 under Captain Christopher Pike.

Tyler was among the landing party that visited Rigel VII, where he was among the injured crewmembers caught in a Kaylar ambush. He was later in the landing party that first beamed down to Talos IV and later, the volunteers who attempted to beam into the Talosian city to rescue Pike. (TOS: "The Cage", "The Menagerie, Parts I and II")

During the Enterprise and Farragut's battle with the temporally displaced Planet Killer, Tyler's skills in maneuvering and evading the weapon proved invaluable. (Star Trek: New Voyages: "In Harm's Way")

In the Star Trek: Daedalus continuity, Tyler was the son of Peter and Maria, as well as the grandson of famed United Earth Starfleet officer, Gerald Tyler. Sometime after his service aboard the Enterprise, Tyler married and eventually had a son, Cedric.

Tyler was still serving in Starfleet in the late 2280s, by which time he had achieved the rank of commodore. He eventually retired in the early 2300s, and died several years after his retirement. (Star Trek: Daedalus)
