John Kelly, a lieutenant, was the commander of a mission to Mars in 2032. Both Kelly and the command module in which he was orbiting the planet disappeared on October 19, 2032, which the other crewmembers were on the surface.

In 2376, the USS Voyager discovered the command module, and Kelly's body, inside a graviton ellipse in the Delta Quadrant. To the crew's surprise, they discovered Kelly had lived several days after being trapped in the ellipse, and had seen an alien ship and been the first Human to find out Humans were not alone in the universe.

Kelly was given a full military funeral by the Voyager crew. (VOY: "One Small Step")
