Janice Rand was a Starfleet crewman and later officer, serving aboard the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), at Earth Spacedock, at Starfleet Command and aboard the USS Excelsior throughout her career.
Rand was born in 2232 and enlisted in Starfleet at an early age. She joined the Enterprise in 2266 and served as Captain James Kirk's Yeoman during this time, and Kirk both respected her and had an attraction to her. (TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver")
She was popular amongst the crew, only second to Nyota Uhura, who was her close friend. Rand also felt sorry for Charles Evans, an orphan given extraordinary powers by the Thasians. (TOS: "Charlie X")
Despite her attraction to Kirk, and vice versa, the two never took their relationship beyond the professional level, and Rand left the Enterprise in early 2267. (TOS: "Balance of Terror", "Miri", "The Naked Time", "The Conscience of the King")
Under Captain Willard Decker's command, Rand was the refit Enterprise's transporter chief as of 2272. After the V'Ger incident, she elected to remain aboard the Enterprise, now under Admiral Kirk's command. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
Sometime between 2272 and 2290, Rand transferred to both Earth Spacedock and Starfleet Command. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
After this, she trained to become an officer and gained the rank of ensign after three years. By 2290, she held the rank of lieutenant junior grade and was the Excelsior's communications officer under Captain Hikaru Sulu. (VOY: "Flashback"; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

Janice Rand must have had at least one child, because her granddaughter served as a Vice Admiral in Starfleet in the late 24th century. (HF: "Things Fall Apart")
