In starship classification, a fast cruiser is a type of cruiser with an emphasis on speed and manoeuvrability. This makes them suitable for long-range diplomatic and courier missions as well as forward reconnaissance. (LUG RPG: Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet)

The Klingon Defense Force, Romulan Star Navy and the Cardassian Guard used the term incursion cruiser for their fast cruisers.
