The Huron class was an Hydran heavy destroyer fielded in the 24th century. As with all Hydran starships, they were designed with maximum evacuation capacity in mind; its MEC was 3,500. (RIS Bouteina: "Cost of Captivity")
Designed to be 90% as effective and only 70% as expensive as the Ranger/Dragoon series, this class of light cruisers came into use around the same time that other races developed war cruisers. It had fewer fusion beams than the Ranger did, but with a better firing arc. The Horseman was a disappointment as a war cruiser and even the extensive refits did not solve the basic problems. It was eventually replaced by the more powerful Mongol, but remained in production for use as source of variant hulls.
Produced in the Old Colonies after the fall of the Hydran capital, Hydrax, this greatly improved version of the Horseman incorporated substantially improved firepower. Development began with the Horseman+ design, which had been refitted extensively. The hull was stretched slightly, which provided more room for weapons and systems.
This was the command version of the Mongol medium cruiser. While it had many different armaments, fusions were clearly preferred. It carried two squadrons of two fighters each. (TOS video game: Starfleet Command (game))
In the 2360s, even the venerable Comanche class began to show signs of aging. Its fusion beam emitters, as well as the hellbore cannons, were upgraded. And it was equipped with the multi-vector assault mode, giving this ship the capability to split in two. Some ships of this class were named after play characters. This class was meant to catch up with the latest in Klingon and Lyran technology, as well as Federation technology to a lesser extent. This ship was designated a heavy destroyer. (RIS Bouteina: "Cost of Captivity")
- It was likely that the Huron class was one of the distant ancestors of the Federation Prometheus-class.
