Hockey is a human sport, usually played by two teams with five skaters and a goaltender each, all of which wear protective gear, especially for goaltenders. This sport is played on a sheet of ice. Like in baseball, organized league play began in the early 20th century. Its goal was for a team to put the puck within the goal, sometimes called the crease. Tom Paris was quite fond of both watching and playing hockey games. The sport was also known to the Nausicaans. (VOY: "Ashes to Ashes", "Memorial", "Critical Care")

RIS Bouteina Edit

The Subytts were quite fond of hockey, although they described it as being a very violent sport played on a sheet of ice. So violent, in fact, that a Subytt proverb arose pertaining to hockey's violence: "I went to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out." However, the Subytts considered this sport as being the fastest team sport in the universe, as well as one of the most magnificent games to watch and play when fights don't break out. (RIS Bouteina: "Jockship")

Mizarh kept the puck with which he scored his 100th goal as a pee-wee hockey player as a redshirt's good-luck charm, which Annika Hansen juggled when she presented the challenge the Lyran captain, Pilerk, issued to the bridge crew of the RIS Bouteina, which was a hockey game, won by the Praetorians against the Wildcats, which were all crewmembers of the Chotiska. (RIS Bouteina: "A Hockey Game Broke Out", "Ultimate Wager")

A Hockey Game Broke Out and Ultimate Wager seemed to infer that the Nausicaans played hockey in a similar fashion as the Lyrans did, as both species were depicted as playing a physical brand of hockey.

Major hockey leagues existed on the Subytt homeworld; Mizarh dreamed that one day, he could play in these major leagues. (RIS Bouteina: "Rator III Awaits")

The writer of RIS Bouteina, residing in the Greater Montreal area, became a hockey fan, and more importantly, of the Montreal Canadiens, decided to write a two-episode Christmas special about a hockey game.
