Gordon Lightfoot was a Canadian singer and songwriter who achieved international success in folk, country, and popular music in the late 20th Century.

His 1976 hit "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" inspired the naming of the Sovereign-class USS Edmund Fitzgerald that was launched in 2374. A line from his 1974 hit "Carefree Highway," would be used as the quote for Fitzgerald's Dedication plaque. (USS Baldwin: "Wartime Productions")
