George Samuel Kirk, Sr. was a Federation Starfleet officer on active duty in the 23rd century.

His first and middle names were from TOS novel Final Frontier, but only his first was apparently made canon in Star Trek.

George Kirk was the husband of Winona Kirk and the father of George Samuel Kirk, Jr. and James T. Kirk. During at least the 2230s, Lieutenant Commander George Kirk was executive officer on the USS Kelvin under Captain Richard Robau. (Star Trek)

Nero's incursion from 2387, as well as some other events, may have delayed the Kelvin from reaching Earth so Jim could be born in Iowa, rather than aboard a medevac shuttle.

The senior Kirk had lived to see Jim become captain of the Enterprise (Star Trek), but apparently died a year or so afterwards.

A scene filmed for, but cut from, TOS: "Operation -- Annihilate!" refers to the possibility of Peter Kirk being sent to live with his grandmother after the death of his parents. His grandfather is not mentioned.

Shatnerverse[]

Absolute Horizon[]

In addition to Sam and Jim, George and Winona had a daughter, Carolina (born two years before Jim), who had been stillborn.

George died in 2246, when Jim was 13. Afterwards, Jim ran away to live with relatives on Tarsus IV.

Orion Press[]

George is said to have died shortly after the events on Tarsus IV, when Jim was about 14 or 15. (Orion Press: "A Form of Release")

In late 2295, Lieutenant Peter Kirk asked Captain Kevin Riley of Starfleet Intelligence to tell him how his grandfather had died. Winona, Sam and Jim Kirk had all died without knowing the truth. Riley replied that Peter was not yet ready to know. ("Truth and Consequences")
