Four varieties of gagh

"It's been a long time since I've had gagh. I look forward to it. Very fresh." - Picard (TNG: "Unification I")

Gagh is a Klingon delicacy consisting of unprocessed serpent worms. Although most Klingons prefer it live, it can be served stewed as well. Many humans tend to find it unappetizing, though both William Riker and Jean-Luc Picard claimed to have developed a taste for it, and Julian Bashir occasionally enjoyed it. Most eat it not for the taste, which is described as disgusting, but for the sensation of the gagh spasming in one's mouth as it dies. (TNG: "A Matter Of Honor"; DS9: "Melora") However, Richard Boswell was known to enjoy the flavor and ate it quite prolifically. (Star Trek: Remington)

In 2375, a shipment of gagh ordered by Jadzia Dax arrived on Deep Space 9. She ordered it for the celebration of General Martok's birthday, but Ezri Dax wanted to have it thrown out into space because the memories of eating gagh made her sick. (DS9: "Prodigal Daughter")

Gagh varieties[]

There are at least 51 different types of gagh, each with its distinct taste and texture:

  • Bithool gagh, which has feet
  • Filden gagh, which squirms
  • Meshta gagh, which jumps
  • Torgud gagh, which wiggles
  • Wistan gagh, which is packed in targ blood
  • TlhanpeQ gagh, which is pickled
  • Litvok gagh, which crawls

Gagh in fanon[]

Dhiemm ate gagh because no one else wanted to eat gagh at Lodash's table. He later revealed that the gagh he ate was torgud gagh. (RIS Bouteina: "Marianela")

Filden gagh was eaten by Vaebn Mairex because Brianna Reiss stated that filden gagh was a Romulan aphrodisiac. (RIS Bouteina: "No Child Left Untested")

Rakelli regarded gagh as food that should be eaten only on special occasions, like Christmas. Also, an away mission on Saronia revealed that breeding gagh required a waste container filled with table waste and that methane should be evacuated from the farming zone. Saronians sold and shipped large quantities of gagh in bushels. (RIS Bouteina: "Marriage and Honeymoon")

Litvok gagh was the variety of gagh that was obtained by hybridizing filden gagh and torgud gagh. (RIS Bouteina: "Redshirt Distribution")

TlhanpeQ gagh was Richard Boswell's favorite variety, and as he noted, the pickling process made the worms squirm even more than other varieties. (Star Trek: Remington)

Vor'cha spices were used by non-Klingons to mask the taste of gagh. (RIS Bouteina: "Miracle in Whoville")

Dhiemm angered Vaebn Mairex and Brianna Reiss because he cooked gagh poorly. (RIS Bouteina: "Super Size Me")

The RIS Bouteina was the only ship in the Tal Prai'ex that wasn't Klingon-built to have the capability to produce its own gagh. Also, Florence Finney was a seasoned gagh cook, even going as far as cooking gagh au gratin, gagh stew and sautéed gagh. (RIS Bouteina: "Hystelic Kingdom")

Brianna Reiss won a gagh farm for the Stoneship (BC-347) by betting on a soapbox car race. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "Dilithium Dance")
