"First Place" is a short story, by the pseudonymous Jean-Luc Picard, set in the same continuity as Star Trek: Laughing Sawfish.
The contemporary portions of the story are set during the Dominion War, when Captain Ra'id "Raheesh" Nazar flashes back to his youth as an association football player on Al-Jamal nearly 15 years previously. A lesson he learned from a rival player then resonated with a combat situation in which he would find himself.
