A Macintosh Plus computer (1986)

A computer is an electronic device that can manipulate and store data.

Monotronic computers[]

Computers used in the early stages of warp civilization were often monotronic computers. Taev Radaik mused that the owners of monotronic chips were very advanced for a pre-warp civilization when checking out the labs in an university on a planet with a pre-warp civilization. (RIS Bouteina: "Credit Card Scholarship")

Quantum computers[]

Most computers used by the Federation during the 24th Century are quantum computers that use quantum-mechanical phenomena of atoms to perform their operations. Quantum computers produce huge amounts of waste heat. Avoidance of problems with the waste heat of quantum computers was a topic of importance in city planning in Federation cities. (Dragon Ball Z vs. Star Trek: The Way of Infinity)

The technology of spintronics mostly used in data storage devices is related to quantum computer technology. (Dragon Ball Z vs. Star Trek: The Way of Infinity)

Targeting computers[]

Lyran targeting computers were peculiar in so much that the pilot could override it. Both the tactical officer and the pilot could pinpoint a target and then have the choice of either "right-clicking", which puts the ship on an intercept course for the target, or "left-clicking", which merely gives a target for the ship's weapons. Also, one could "macro" targets on the tactical console's keyboard. (RIS Bouteina: "The Measure of a Romulan")

String computer technology[]

The String was realised only one time at the Arale Supercomputer, due to its high energy costs. Every String has the same performance as 5 Isolinear chips, but the system needs much energy because strong gravity fields are needed to store a string at its place. One side effect of this computer technology is the creation of temporal anomalies. (Dragon Ball Z vs Star Trek The Beginning of Infinity: "Times of Change and Times for the search for luck")

Cultural impact of computers[]

Computers have marked several races in different ways. As their computing technology became more advanced, Subytts came to value computer science expertise in their society and even deem the brightest people they meet as "redshirt computers". (RIS Bouteina: "Redshirt Computer")
