First of her kind, the USS Constellation (NX-1017) heralded a new starship class at the beginning of the 2240s.

This ship class was the first to have the Technology seen on Modern Starships such as the Duotronic Computer system, also the Constellation Class used many Components that would never be used on Future Starships.

The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) was originally a Constellation Starship with only the Registry NX-0002 before being overhauled into a Constitution class and Renamed Enterprise in 2245.

The ship was commanded by Captain Robert April until his posting as captain of the USS Enterprise for her early test runs. His first officer, Matthew Decker was promoted to captain of the Constellation and oversaw her refit to Constitution Class some years later. As Commodore, Decker led the fleet to Organia to repel the Klingon invasion of the Federation. (TOS: "Errand of Mercy") Later, he was killed when the Constellation was lost in battle against the robotic planet killer. (TOS: "The Doomsday Machine")
