The primary task of the Starfighter Corps is to supplement the forces of Starfleet and exist as a fast attack force in case of war. Because Starfleet suffered massive losses of Peregrine class fighters during the Dominion War, it was decided, in the same command decision that created the Federation Marine Corps, the Starfighter Corps would be formed as a separate branch of the Federation military solely devoted to piloting smaller vessels, such as fighters. The primary vessel operated by the Corps is the Sisko-class attack fighter.
