A fast attack ship is a small starship utilized to engage ships against enemy or hostile threats in a quick fashion. These types of ships are usually assigned near a starbase, planet or larger starship as their size hinders them in open space.

In the Cardassian fleet fast attack ships are smaller, faster destroyers and are often referred to as perimeter defense ships. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 2: Starships of the Cardassian Union)

Klingons saw the fast attack ships as "sexy" due to the opportunities to earn honour serving on such vessels. While not heavily armed by Klingon standards the small crew gave a Klingon more chance to distinguish themselves. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 3: Ships of the Klingon Empire)

The Federation does not typically use this term to describe any of its vessels. The closest comparison would be a fast frigate or fast courier. (Spacedock: The Advanced Starship and Construction Manual)
