Engineering, or main engineering, was the location on a starship that usually housed the warp drive and the impulse drive, or, on a space station, the power plant. It usually featured computer displays on which a facility's systems were displayed for diagnosis checks.

On Starfleet starships, main engineering was often located on the secondary hull.

In the Lyran Starfleet, the engineering division was also the division of a ship's crew responsible for damage control and maintenance of all systems on the ship. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files)
