Communications officer

A communications officer bears responsibility for internal and external communications aboard a starship or starbase. This person is usually a specialist in this area.

In the 22nd century, Earth Starfleet communications officers sometimes were linguists as well. (ENT: "Broken Bow", et al)

By the 23rd century, the universal translator was more reliable, and the communications officer bore responsibility mainly for communications internally and externally. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before", et al)

In the 24th century, the communications officer position was no longer a separate position aboard the bridge. The tactical officer and/or operations manager would also fill this function. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint", et al)

Onboard the USS Prometheus in 2378, under the command of Logan MacLeod, the communications officer's duties were part of the first officer's bridge duties.
