The Cardassian neck trick is a physical feat performed by Cardassians.

Due to their prominent neckbones, Cardassians can only move their heads 180 degrees, compared to Humans who can turn 240 degrees. However, some Cardassians are able to disconnect from their neckbones (similar to humans dislocating a shoulder) and turn their heads 300 degrees. The feat is painful, but very amusing to Cardassians viewing it. (Cardassian Sourcebook) Odo once performed the trick before a group of Cardassian officers. (DS9: "Necessary Evil")

Star Trek: Sigils and Unions continuity[]

The "Cardassian neck trick" is strictly Odo's imitation of Cardassian anatomy.

This is based on the established Star Trek: Sigils and Unions explanation of Cardassian neck ridges as being made of tendons and cartilage rather than bones as is the spinal column. The effect of the eye ridges on peripheral vision thus necessitates that Cardassians be able to turn their heads quickly and effectively to compensate. (Star Trek: Sigils and Unions--"Those Who Remain," "Cousins We Could Have Been and How to Draw Them")
