Captain a military rank used in MACOs and Federation Marines, immediately superior to first lieutenant and subordinate to major. A captain commands a company, about 100-300 soldiers.
- MACO captains did not appear in Star Trek: Enterprise to avoid audience confusion over rank names.
This rank is also used in the Bajoran Militia. (DS9)
The Romulan Ground Forces used the rank it was above lieutenant and below major. They usually commanded al'gess'vals. (The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon) The rank was known as lhaell in Rihannsu; even more importantly among the Tal Shiar. (RIS Bouteina)
The rank is equivalent to the Starfleet rank of lieutenant, colonel in the Federation Starfighter Corps, and the Romulan and pre-Federation Vulcan rank of lieutenant.

The term comes from the armies and marines of Earth. The United States Army abbreviation was CPT; the Marine Corps used Capt.
