The Battle of Wolf 359 was the first major engagement between the Federation and the Borg and occurred in 2367.
Following the attacks on New Providence, the USS Lalo and the USS Enterprise-D, Starfleet Command prepared a force of forty starships to try and stop the Borg cube before it could reach Earth. The Federation force and the Borg cube met in the Wolf 359 system. (TNG: "Best of Both Worlds, Part I", "Best of Both Worlds, Part II").
During the battle the USS Rebellious attempted to stop the Borg cube by making modulations to its deflector dish, but, once fired, the Borg sent a feedback loop, severely crippling the ship. First officer Elizabeth Singh and Regina Meyer survived the assault, and, in their attempt to escape, witnessed the Borg leading away survivors, including Esthappen and Rahel Singh. Eleven survivors escaped the Rebellious, including Elizabeth Singh and Meyer, before the ship exploded. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Devil's Cube")
The battle was no less then a disaster for the Federation, thirty-nine vessels were destroyed in the battle at a cost of around 11,000 lives. While the fleet failed in its objective to stop the Borg at Wolf 359 the USS Enterprise-D managed to catch up to the cube near Earth and initiate a feedback loop that destroyed it. (TNG: "Best of Both Worlds, Part II", "The Drumhead")
