Battle of Sector 001

The Battle of Wolf 359 was the first major engagement between the Federation and the Borg and occurred in 2367.

Following the attacks on New Providence, the USS Lalo and the USS Enterprise-D, Starfleet Command prepared a force of forty starships to try and stop the Borg cube before it could reach Earth. The Federation force and the Borg cube met in the Wolf 359 system. (TNG: "Best of Both Worlds, Part I", "Best of Both Worlds, Part II").

During the battle the USS Rebellious attempted to stop the Borg cube by making modulations to its deflector dish, but, once fired, the Borg sent a feedback loop, severely crippling the ship. First officer Elizabeth Singh and Regina Meyer survived the assault, and, in their attempt to escape, witnessed the Borg leading away survivors, including Esthappen and Rahel Singh. Eleven survivors escaped the Rebellious, including Elizabeth Singh and Meyer, before the ship exploded. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Devil's Cube")

The battle was no less then a disaster for the Federation, thirty-nine vessels were destroyed in the battle at a cost of around 11,000 lives. While the fleet failed in its objective to stop the Borg at Wolf 359 the USS Enterprise-D managed to catch up to the cube near Earth and initiate a feedback loop that destroyed it. (TNG: "Best of Both Worlds, Part II", "The Drumhead")

AftermathEdit

The wreckage of Admiral Hanson's fleet after the battle.

The USS Prospect arrived moments after the battle's conclusion to find an alien ship communicating with the Borg cube. With the alien ship not communicating, the Prospect pursued and disabled the ship, boarding it to find the ship was a 27th century ship full of historians. The Prospect returned to help with the recovery effort at Wolf 359. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "The Burnt Child")

Anne Lansing, in command of the USS Worsaae, and her crew assisted in the rescue and recovery effort after the battle. In addition, counselor Daniel Radke, engineer Jason Athelstan and several Starfleet Medical personnel accompanied Lansing and her crew, helping the survivors. The USS Arlington and USS Barrington were among the other starships helping in the recovery effort. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "The Burnt Child")

Daniel Radke and other counselors continued to help heal the mental scars, with Benjamin and Jake Sisko being Radke's patients. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "The Burnt Child") He and the others returned to Earth to continue the counseling, with his roll of patients growing to include victim's family members, including Corey Aster. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Dream a Little Dream of Me")

Effects Edit

Starfleet required over a year to rebuild its forces after the catastrophic losses at Wolf 359. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II")

Starfleet planners made a number of doctrinal and technical changes in the wake of the disaster, which included developing the Defiant-class tactical escort as an inexpensive, high-powered corvette to swarm and overwhelm Borg ships. (DS9: "The Search, Part I"; The War of the Masters: "The Silence Ends")

In 2407, Lieutenant Commander Tyria Sark, teaching military history to Starfleet ROTC cadets at Leran Manev State University, assigned her students to write an essay analyzing changes prompted by Wolf 359. (The War of the Masters: "The Silence Ends")
