The Battle of Sector 432 was one of the earliest major battles of the Dominion War occurring just over a week after the Second Battle of Deep Space 9 and the Battle of Torros III. The battle was fought in Sector 432 between the Dominion and Starfleet's Fifth Fleet. (Star Trek: Swiftfire)
The battle began when twenty-four Jem'Hadar attack ships pursued a scouting group from the 198th Tactical Wing back to the star system in the sector where the Fifth Fleet was staging out of. Nineteen attack ships were destroyed by the fleet's first line of defence, with the remaining five falling to the second line. With the ships destroyed the fleet started to disburse from their combat station and was caught by surprise by a second wave of enemy warships.
Fifty-two attack ships, eighteen Hideki-classs, with eight Galor-class and eight Jem'Hadar battle cruisers in support dropped out of warp on top of the broken first line. The first line was unable to stop a large number of attack ships from penetrating their line and numerous unprepared Peregrine-class attack fighters were destroyed by Hideki fast attack ships. The larger ships engaged the Starfleet vessels at range so to keep the ships in the first line occupied. The attack ships were then able to penetrate the second line, uninterested in engaging the Starfleet ships. Their target was the vast Sector 432 repair yards deeper within the system. The repair yards was a massive facility and was crucial to the Fifth's operations within around around Sector 432. Eighteen Jem'Hadar attack ships managed to reach the yards and assaulted the facilities. All be two were destroyed before they could make a second run on the yards, though in the end it was enough to fulfil their objective. The ships rammed the yards and a docked Excelsior-class starship, effectively disabling the yards. With their objective complete the surviving Dominion and Cardassian ships left the system.
Over the next three hours three more large Dominion attack forces assaulted the Fifth Fleet. While the Fifth held its lines over forty starships were either destroyed or heavily damaged, with four destroyed and eight heavily damaged in the last attack alone. The fleet withstood at least another day of frequent Dominion attacks, while the attacks were small they were whittling down the fleet's number with thirty ships destroyed and ten times that number suffering various degrees of damage. Despite this the fleet fought on to hold its position and bring the repair yards back online.
The situation finally became untenable when listening posts detected a Dominion division moving towards Sector 432. After over a day of attacks the Fifth was in no shape to repel such a large Dominion attack and Admiral Victor Harvey decided to pull the fleet back before the division attacked. The repair yards and the starbase in the system were evacuated and booby trapped before the fleet retreated.
The Fifth Fleet's retreat was the fourth major retreat by Starfleet within a week and closely followed the Second Fleet's retreat that cost them twenty-nine starships. It was a pattern that would become all to familiar to Starfleet in the opening months of the war. ("The Front")
Unfortunately Harvey's decision to booby trap the facilities they left behind rather then destroy them outright would prove to be a mistake. The Dominion was able to preserve the repair yards and expand them. Sector 432 then became a major support area for the Dominion and Cardassian forces as they pushed forward, which would led to the Raid on Sector 432 some three months later, which also involved the Fifth Fleet. ("Pressure Points")
