The Battle of Cheron was the pivotal battle during the Earth-Romulan War that ended with the crushing defeat of the Romulan Star Empire.
It was during this battle, that Earth forces were able to turn the Romulans back into their own territory and prevent an invasion of Earth for good.
- Per ENT novel: The Romulan War: To Brave the Storm, the battle took place in July, 2160.
Earth's space forces, led by Jonathan Archer and Enterprise, were able to destroy and disable 90% of the Romulan forces making their advance, a force that was already crippled due to the Romulan loss of their staging grounds in Sector 2148. (Star Trek: Poseidon - The Birth of the Federation)
Seven Romulan vessels were taken by force with boarding parties. Four of the seven vessels taken were led by MACO Major Matt Clow and the 501st Strike Force, which was stationed temporarily aboard Enterprise. (Star Trek: Poseidon - The Birth of the Federation)
- In Star Trek: Liberty continuity, the starship Liberty led the Coalition assault on Cheron.
The Marconi-class subspace transmitter vessel UES Ørsted (ACSM-18) was a veteran of the battle and the ship credited with negotiating the peace treaty with the Romulans. (The Starfleet Museum: Baikal Class and Marconi Class)
Aftermath[]
Following the battle, some commanders in the United Earth forces wanted to continue on pushing the Romulans back all the way to Romulus and deal them a death blow which would destroy all their shipbuilding facilities and rule the Romulans out as a major threat. However, cooler heads prevailed and it was decided that as the Romulans were a proud people, total defeat would humiliate them, and would lead to future conflicts. Instead it was decided to leave the Romulans dignity intact. (TOS novel: My Brother's Keeper trilogy: Republic)
An officer named Dandridge would write an account of the battle that would be studied at the Academy nearly a century later. James T. Kirk would assign the text in the course on Federation History he taught. (My Brother's Keeper: Republic)
Even into the 24th century, the battle remained an intense embarrassment for the Romulans, which according to Alidar Jarok, would be retributed by "the new leaders" on Romulus, who "vowed to discard the treaty and claim the Neutral Zone," with Nelvana III being the first step. (TNG: "The Defector")
